The latest changes to the Level 3 Certificate for Working as a Close Protection Operative within the Private Security Industry take effect on the 1st of April 2022 (not too far away). However, at this stage, most training providers are still in the dark concerning what the changes will involve.
What is known for sure is that currently licenced close protection operatives can undertake licenced activities as a door supervisor and security officer (guard) under the SIA licence integration policy.
Nonetheless, that will change by April 2022 as the new licence integration policy will necessitate all training providers of close protection qualifications to have the Level 3 Award for Physical Intervention Trainers in the Private Security Industry. With this, they can deliver the door supervisor unit of Physical Intervention and the new Level 3 Award for Deliverers of Physical Intervention Training for Close Protection Operatives to close protection students.
For close protection instructors, the latter is estimated to be approximately 51 hours of learning. The SIA stipulates a minimum of 20 contact hours for the Application of Physical Intervention Skills for Close Protection Operatives in the Private Security Industry unit.
The subjects covered in this new qualification will include:
- Providing instructions to the principal and team members in emergency situations,
- How to respond to a change in operational conditions,
- Responsibilities of the close protection team when there is an immediate physical threat to the principal,
- The necessity for narrowing the concentric layers of protection when managing an immediate threat to the principal,
- Implications of common and criminal law when using force on another person,
- Understand associated threats as a result of an attempted assault or unwarranted attention towards a principal,
- Assess the training environment to reduce risks in preparation for physical intervention training and assess physical intervention skills.
