On Monday 8th November 2021, our Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work took place within our headquarters at Business Central, Darlington. Attendees were taught by instructor, Allan Blakemore, who has over twelve years of experience working as a Paramedic and has been a first aid instructor for the past 10 years.
The 1-day course combined theory with practice-based learning techniques, analysing key terminology, and reasons why specific practices are carried out. The course covers health emergencies such as heart attack, choking, anaphylaxis, wounds, unconscious patients, and seizures, demonstrating how to correctly practice CPR and use of AED.
Mindful of the threat posed by COVID-19 to people’s health, each manikin is cleaned with a new pair of lungs and breathing tube before the beginning of each class.  Learners have their own manikin to practise with and do not work in pairs on one manikin. Exercises ensure learners can demonstrate their use of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing safely and efficiently as if they are dealing with a real-life scenario. At the end of the class, attendees have to pass a written text in order to receive their certificate of completion.
This course is not only relevant to workplace scenarios but also covers practices that can be very useful in everyday life. All the practical skills gained after a first aid course can make a difference between life and death since they can be crucial in a situation of emergency where someone’s life is at risk. This is why we advocate for the importance of knowing and understanding the reasons for CPR, when it is most effective, as well as when and how to use a defibrillator.
